January 26, 2016 – If All You Have is a Hammer
I have been thinking about the phrase “If all you have is a hammer…” and a simple change “When all you have is a hammer…” I was surprised to realize that one can be interpreted negatively and one is a very positive statement.
We all know that “if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail” has a negative interpretation that means an over reliance on a familiar tool. Many people that we know have this “go to” solution that they will apply to almost all circumstances.
Now the phrase “When all you have is a hammer…” is like having the ability to McGyver stuff although you lack the proper tool to get something done. This is the source of creativity – like another saying “necessity is the mother of invention” – when all you have is a hammer you will have 101 ways to use a hammer (including driving actual nails)
OK enough blabbering for the day.
